Siyapa Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Match 1, Siyapa vs Stonehaven Thistle @ Mineralwell Park 27/4/2019

Siyapa started their 2019 season with a visit to the Mineralwell Park, Stonehaven. Travelling away from Aberdeen may have helped the cause as most of the Aberdeen matches seemed to have got cancelled due to rain.

Team was with 2 debutant, Abdul Rauf, another gift to the team from NHS Grampian and ex-Cresent player Kamran Qaiser, returning to the game after his 2 year long sabbatical following to a back injury.

Siyapa's captain won the toss and decided to field, hoping to make best use of the covered pitch. With regular strike bowler Naveed Ahmed late to arrive, Shahid led the attack with his deputy Asif Yousaf from the other end. This led to early dividends as Shahid kept the scoring subdued from one end (0/8 in 4 overs) while Asif first getting R Van Gissel (3, caught Umer Ghafoor) in his first over and then R. Denlin (9, caught Shahram Memon) in his 4th over ending his first spell 5-1-2-9.

With initial breakthorughs done, and score at 18/2 in 8, ball was thrown to the debutants, bowling in tandem. Kamran managed a wicket in his very first over, bowling over R. Blackwood (1). A. Rauf followed 2 neat overs giving away only 2 runs, followed by 2 overs by Umer Ghafoor who got K. Hinchcliff (1, caught Shahram memon) and finished with 2-0-1-7. As Kamran finished his spell (4-0-1-12), he was replaced by Tanweer, supported by Naveed Ahmed. Tanweer managed a lucky wicket of N. King (3, bowled) who let the ball roll to the wicket after blocking it, bringing the hard hitting Jason Crouws on the pitch. Jason lived dangerously for a while, hitting some balls straight up but was given reprieve by rather generous Siyapa fielding. He managed to hit some splendid shots speeding up the scoring while being supported by patient opener Andy Gales. Shahid brought himself in trying to get another breakthrough as Naveed Ahmed kept his tight line on the other side, finally getting Jason (19, caught Amir Siddique) and later bowling C. Hinchcliff (5), and finishing with excellent figures of 9-3-2-12. As Stonehaven were determined to play off all the overs, Siyapa changed bowlers around giving Tanweer and Asif another spells who managed 1 and 2 more wickets each. As Shahid finished off the inning with the wicket of R. Craig in the 43rd over, Andy remained unbeaten on 32, carrying his bat and taking the team to a total of 101.

After a nice tea, which seemed even better given the wet and cold weather the game resumed with Amir Siddique and Asif Yakub taking the crease. Unfortunately the partnership didn’t last long with Amir nicking the first ball off N. King to the keeper, returning to the pavilion on team’s and individual score of 1. The target of 102 suddenly felt a bit more challenging. However, with Salman and Asif on the crease, the wickets were safe for a while, even though N. Kings swing created trouble for both the batsmen but they managed to keep the score ticking getting to 31//1 in 13 overs. But then N. King also got Salman’s wicket (LBW, 8) before finishing his spell at 8-3-2-12. Salman was replaced by Shahram who started with a 4 and along with some nice drives from Asif Yakub increased the run rate until the 18th over when Asif fell in the middle of the pitch due to a leg cramp while taking a run, getting run out on 24. With score at 45 in 18 overs, the job was only half done and debutant Abdul Rauf was sent in. He ably supported Shahram taking the score to 66 before falling to C. Hinchcliff on 8. As with bowling, he was replaced by in-form Umar Ghafoor who didn’t take any time to go after any loose deliveries, racing to the highest score of 26 helping to win the game for Siyapa in 31 overs while remaining undefeated with Shahram on 23.

So an overall successful start of the 2019 campaign with good bowling, and sensible batting. However, with around half a dozen dropped catches, they made it more difficult then it needed to be. Obviously it needs to improve but for now Siyapa will rejoice at this early victory to kick start their season.
