Siyapa Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs

Match report Siyapa started their 2018 campaign with an away game at Stonehaven Thistle’s home ground. The weather was ideal, pitch was what a groundman can be proud off, especially after the recent weather. Siyapa won the toss and decided to put Stonehaven to bat. A decision that immediately proved good by a wicket by Naveed Ahmed in his first over, getting ball to swing and taking the edge from R Devlin to first slip, where Amir Siddiq didn’t do any mistake. From the other end Naveed ul husnain kept troubling the batsmen both by his difficult left arm over the stump angle and swing. In his first spell of 5 overs, he only gave away a single on the last ball of the spell, after 29 dot balls.

While Naveed ul husnain kept his miserly spell going, Naveed Ahmed on the other end got another wicket in his 3rd over, bowling out A Vangibsel on 11. Another catch was dropped off his ball in his 5th over by Usman Naseem.

At the end of 10 overs, Stonehaven were 2/22. Siyapa got the start they wanted.

Looking at the swing offered by the conditions, Captain decided to bring in Usman Naseem at Naveed Ahmed’s place. This immediately proved to be a smart decision and Usman redeemed himself by getting a wicket off his first delivery, bowling A. Gale Out on 2. His short spell of 3 overs gave another wicket of L Fenton given LBW on 13.

On the other end M Shahid replaced Naveed ul husnain, and started with his typical fiery pace but was unlucky with wickets. A rare occurrence took place at this stage, i.e. a Shahid spell that didn’t yield a wicket!

On the other end Tanweer Khan replaced Usman Naseem and after a maiden over managed to get a wicket (A Wilson, 2)in his second over courtesy a brilliant catch by the keeper/captain that came off a bottom edge. He managed another scalp (of B Cambell on 16, caught by Umer Ghafoor).

Stonehaven were in what seemed like a precarious situation of 86/6 after 27 overs (If Siyapa had only known…..)

With wickets falling around him J Gouws, kept the score going. Not hesitating to swing the bat hard on loose deliveries and hitting over the fielders heads with a tiny bit of help by Siyapa’s fielding he reached to 50, well applauded by the players in the field and in the pavilion.

With J Gouws getting aggressive, Salman brought his most effective bowler back into attack. Naveed ul husnain again started with a maiden, but the batsman was too settled by then and even managed to hit some boundaries of him. Despite the late onslaught, Naveed ul husnain finished with the miserly figures of 0/19 after 10 overs.

M Shahid’s second spell managed 2 more wickets for Siyapa but still couldn’t remove J Gouws from the crease. The score rate was brought under control first by the difficult angle of Khurram Haseeb, followed by return of Naveed Ahmed into attack and also the introduction quick off spinners of Umer Ghafoor. who quickly rounded off the last 2 wickets in his 3rd over.

Given a target of 146 to chase, and knowing the record of the ground there were apprehensions in the camp but still the idea was the to keep calm. Amir Siddque and Umer Ghafoor started the inning calmly with some safe singles. However, this calm soon gave way to panic when Umer got out in the 3rd over. Experienced grades campaigner Hamayun Mazhar joined Amir on the crease but soon fell victim to a risky run decision and got run out due to a direct hit. This remained a continuous theme through out the innings. Captain Salman Bedaar joined Amir on the crease and a period of consolidation continued till the 13 overs when the score was in the 30s and Amir got bowled by Siyapa’s nemesis of the day – J Gouwes on 23. Salman was then joined by reliable batsman Khurram Haseeb who fell victim to yet another risky run and direct throw at stumps by Stonehaven. With score at 42/3 Salman was joined at the crease by debutant Nauman Naseem, who started with lots of confidence and scored a quick fire 9 with 2 boundaries, but then fell in the 20th over followed by his brother Usman on the very next ball. Naveed ul husnain survived the hatrick ball and again started a phase of rebuilding. With captain and vice captain on the crease, and continuous flow of runs brought the nerves back and score reached a respectable 78 in 26 overs. However, Naveed got caught in the 27th over off A Palthero bringing the hard hitting M Shahid on the crease. He quickly proved his effectiveness by hitting 2 boundaries and forcing Stonehaven to spread their fielders a bit. However, disaster struck on the other end when Salman was given LBW off R Devin on 32. With the tail truly in, M Shahid took it on himself to finish it off and went about doing it in style by hitting the only 6 of the inning, but L Fenton managed to get him caught at 16. The tail didn’t last long afterwards with Tanweer getting bowled by C Finlay in the 33rd over at the total score of 108.
While Stonehaven clearly played a better game and deserve full credit for that, Siyapa made too many simple mistakes to recover from in the game. But the season has just started and they have still all to play for. Overall a cracking game played at a good pitch against an excellent team. Probably most importantly, the game was played in a very cordial environment that made it much more enjoyable for everyone. Best of luck to both the games for the season.
