Match report Match 6 – Siyapa vs Ellon Report- “Stemming the flow of runs”
Siyapa will ‘do well to stem the run flow’ of Ellon Gordon, wrote Jack Nixon before the 9th June encounter of the Grade 2 contestants. Indeed, a decent challenge to throw towards Siyapa against a team that has scored a record 459/1 in their previous game against 2nd AGSFPs. If the results are anything to go by, Siyapa proved more than up for the challenge.
The game was played at Ellon’s beautiful home ground at Gordon Park. Yet another nice summer day was in full bloom and Siyapa’s captain successfully called the toss and put Ellon to bat. With a depth in the bowling few other’s in Grades can claim, Siyapa’s captain was comfortable that Ellon can be restricted to a chase able target. Ellon could be forgiven for feeling confident in their batting after their exceptional recent performances with the bat. Centurion from their previous game S. Davies started the innings with Billy Turner. Siyapa’s attack was led by the left-right combination Naveeds. While the bowlers clearly didn’t let the batsmen to have much freedom in their shots, they also couldn’t completely contain them. Naveed ul-Husnain got the first wicket when he rattled Billy’s stumps at the score of 12. By the time the first spells of the Naveeds ended, Ellon were 36/1 at the end of 12th over. At this point the swing of the opening bowlers was replaced by the experience of Amir and Shahid. With both the previous game centurions (S. Davies and J Barret) on the crease, and run rate escalating, Captain Salman brought back the sole wicket taker so-far, Naveed ul Husnain, back in the attack, supported by Asif Yousaf. As Naveed immediately stopped the free flow of runs, Asif decided to drill a hole through Ellon’s batting line-up. His second over yielded 2 wickets, getting rid of J. Barret (30) and S.Middleton (0). He also got the scalps of A. Addy (9), M. Sandham (2) and I. Doss (13). Shahid joined his party with the wicket of H Paterson (0). With the flurry of wickets around him S. Davies carried on bravely and managed to take the score to a respectable 187, himself finishing with a well-deserved century. Asif finished with exceptional figures of 5/33 in 9 overs. Siyapa's first 5 wicket haul of the season.
With Jack Nixon’s challenge met, Siyapa’s went ahead with their chase. Saad Khan and Asif Yaqoob started the inning for Siyapa. Ellon’s attack was led by R. Wade and I Doss. As Asif started with a single, Saad started with a 6 but soon reigned in the excitement. Both the openers tried building the innings but couldn’t last very long as Saad his wicket to I Doss on 12 and Asif to R. Wade on 13. These were replaced with Salman and Shahram on the crease. As has been the case during much of the season, Salman built a solid inning with singles splintered with 4s off any loose delivery. Shahram accompanied him for a while but attempted one shot too many and got caught off a J.Barret delivery on the score of 11. He was replaced by ex-Ellon Gordon player Khurram Hasseb on the crease. With 2 fifties between them, Salman (57) and Khurram (57 n.o.) pretty much overcame the total posed by Ellon with a bit of support from Amir (9) and Shahid (4 n.o) whose arrival on the crease doubled the run rate by his extraordinary running between the wickets, converting 2’s from 1’s. Unfortunately, this quick running was accompanied by 2 run-out claims by Ellon that were adjudicated by the umpires as not-out. Ellon decided to walk away from the game, leaving the game incomplete at 180/6 in the 43rd over.
Disappointingly the result of what was otherwise a memorable game of cricket, was decided by the Grades Competition Subcommittee to be awarded to Siyapa.
Siyapa however decided to investigate all 3 contentious decisions raised by Ellon on its own and the conclusion on all of these is given in 3 separate posts for the sake of transparency. These are accompanied by the video evidence available with Siyapa.
