Siyapa Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report This match was played between Siyapa and Gordonians in Duthie park on a beautiful sunny day which is becoming the norm this year (fingers crossed 😊). Contrary to lush green fields of Aberdeenshire, the pitch was solid rock and the ground field was lightning fast due to absence of any green grass on the field. The absence of rain is not only impacting the greenery and ground field but also resulting in high scoring games this season.
The toss was won by Siyapa and Gordonians were put in to bat first. Siyapa plan was to capitalise on their strong bowling line-up and give low possible chasing target to (the absence of their main batsmen) their weak batting line up at least on paper (high scorers of this season for Siyapa (Salman, Shahram & Khurram) were not playing). However, Gordonian openers (I Pandit & Mohit Khosla) had other plans. Siyapa bowling was started by N Ahmed from Lake end and N Ul-Hassnan from Botany gardens end. Gordonian openers started the innings with confidence, forward defensing on good length balls and punishing bad balls. The uneven bounce of the pitch didn’t stop them from playing shots and any neat touch of the bat was well helped by the fast outfield. An average of 5 in first 10 overs with a wicket loss meant Gordonians were aiming for big total. Siyapa opening bowlers did produce good deliveries but either they were negotiated well or luckily for batsmen, the catches were dropped and some close LBW were given not out. The bowling from the Lake end was changed and the most experienced Siyapa bowler M Shahid was asked to bowl the 7th over. However, the flow of the runs continued and, in an attempt, to stop those runs, A Yousaf was brought in from the Botany Gardens end in 14th over. Siyapa captain gave ball to Usman (from Lake end) in 17th over, who was playing after very long but did not take any time to settle and started with very good line outside off stump. M Khosla, who was very set at that point and was playing big shots was forced to mistime one attempted six on the straight and sky-high catch was taken comfortably by N Ul-Hassnan. M Khosla was out for 68 when the opening stand of 123 was broken in the 19th over. Before M Khosla wicket, Gordonians were scoring more than 6 an over but after his wicket, Usman and Asif controlled the run rate with their good lengths ensuring the batmen are kept in check and wickets kept falling. Each one of them finished their 10 overs quota with 2 wickets each. M Shahid was brought back in the attack and he ensured the pressure is kept on the batsman and in the process took 2 wickets on consecutive balls (first Siyapa hat-trick was missed marginally). While wickets were falling regularly, J Shiekh (2nd down batsman from Gordonians) was solid at one end and kept the score moving with gritty 1s and 2s in the gaps. N Ahmed was introduced back into the attack in 37th over and fresh from 5 wickets haul in the last match, N Ahmed bowled his remaining over with excellent control and accuracy. Gordonian batsmen showed good resistance and slowly kept the score ticking and reached to 221 in 45th over, losing their 10th wicket in the last over. N Ahmed finished with 4 wickets. Siyapa after dropping couple of catches in the start of the match ensured that all the catches are taken. In total, Siyapa took 7 catches, 2 batsmen were bowled, and one batsman was given LBW.
It was looking mammoth task for a rather depleted Siyapa batting but openers (B Usman and S Khan) did not show any sign of nerve and started the innings cautiously (run rate of approx. 3 after first 10 overs). J Sheikh from botany Gardens end and A Dolman from Lake end started the bowling for Gordonians. J Sheikh was very economical and gave away only 1 run in his first 5 overs. Gordonians bowled 6 maiden overs from Botany gardens end and Siyapa could manage only 1 run in the first 7 overs from that end. Siyapa lost their 1st wicket in 12th over and at a total score of 40, both openers were back to the pavilion. B Usman was caught behind when the ball clipped his gloves while attempting to play a bouncer and walked out without waiting for umpire’s call. S Rowell and I Pandit were first and second change bowlers and started bowling with good pace and control.
Consolidation was required at this point and was provided to its fullest by next 2 Siyapa batsmen (A Siddique & A Yaqub). Their batting not only showed maturity (almost a chance less innings though Asif was dropped twice - both tough chances) and responsibility but also proved the batting strength of Siyapa as a team. Both kept rotating the strike and sending over pitched balls to the boundaries. Their cause was also helped by wicket keeper missing plenty of balls and giving free runs. They played gem of innings and took the score to 174 before A Siddique was caught (68) by the bowler (I Pandit) himself. For Siyapa, it was done and dusted at that point but there was another twist in the game when A Yaqub was bowled (58) by beautiful in-swinging delivery from S Rowell in 38th over at a total of 203. A very close run out of M Shahid and LBW of A Hashmi in the 40th over nerved the things further for Siyapa. With 16 needed off 4 overs with 4 wickets in hand, Siyapa were still comfortable to win the game as in-form A Yousaf was on crease and N Ul-Hassnan and others yet to come who all can bat. 3 runs were scored in 42nd over which meant 13 were needed off 3 overs. H Mazhar started the next over with a delicate 4 on the leg side but was run out on the next ball while attempting 2nd run on the similar shot but closer to the fielder. N Ul-Hassnan and A Yousaf the 2 experienced players on the crease scored remaining 8 runs with ease and the game was won on the 1st ball of 44th over.
It was excellent game of cricket from both teams and was played well within the spirit of the game. There were couple of close LBW calls from both sides which went in the Batsmen favour but equally some close run outs and LBWs given by both teams ensured the game was played with fair intentions.
